Forget Residential, Commercial real estate is for Moms

Retail real estate is a thriving industry that offers many exciting opportunities for self driven professionals looking to make a difference. While it historically been a male-dominated industry (what isn’t?), there is a growing trend of women entering the field, and there are many reasons why more women should consider a career in retail real estate.

Flexibility is one of the biggest reasons why retail real estate is an attractive option for women. Unlike residential, most business owners we work with are scouting locations and showing their properties during the day. It’s often easier to plan around family responsibilities. However, there are a few dinners and evening events that will come up, so bear in mind that not every afternoon can you get back at 230pm to get the kids off the bus. (It takes a village!)

While there is no book on the world of retail real estate, with women making over 85% of all consumer purchases for themselves, family and friends, the best way to get into the field is to have a well-respected mentor. As women, we know what’s hot and what’s not. We often are in the know about emerging retail brands, where the best ramen in the city is and why one destination is more appealing than the next.

One of our favorite parts of working in retail real estate involves interacting with a wide range of individuals, from business owners and landlords to shoppers and customers. We’re often scouting restaurants in parts of town that your typical day to day doesn’t allow you to connect with. We’re meeting with small business owners and asking them what’s missing in their community to better understand what brands and types of retails and restaurants would be successful.

Love dining out? Our team is heavy in the restaurant world and we promise, you’ll never be hungry with us! While we work with some of the biggest and most successful restaurant chains in the US, our true joy comes in teaching the small business owners how to navigate site selection, lease negotiations and over time, purchasing their buildings. We love the exciting and dynamic work environment, but it also allows us to be part of the growth and success of these businesses.

If you’re curious and want to learn more, feel free to reach out, we’re happy to share a day in the life with you and see if this arena is a fit!
